Mick & Bianca Jagger, Villa Nellcôte, during the making of Exile on Main Street, July 1971, by Dominique Tarlé.
I’ve gotten a ton of messages that this is Keith – no. The picture is huge, so click on it to enlarge, where it’s super-obvious.
Still not convinced? Mick was also wearing this shirt in other pictures from that day, including these:
Whereas Keef spent much of that summer wearing no shirt at all:
…or shirtless in this vest, which also offers you a chance to see that he and Mick’s haircuts are actually not all that similar (Keith’s being much more raised on top, and sculptured and thinned out at the bottom)….
…or in a robe….
….or this filthy thing, whatever it is…
…and in general, Keith spent his considerable leisure time not with Bianca, but with Anita Pallenberg and their son Marlon…
…including some jaunts about town, here again close-ish to shirtless with a tank top.
(Note that all the pictures so far but the last one by Michael Cooper, are by Dominique Tarle, and most from the Stones’ own gallery of Dominique’s photos that summer, which you can peruse here.)
In any case, Keith is NEVER seen wearing that t-shirt in the first photo. For that matter, Keith has rarely been photographed in a t-shirt, whereas Mick has been photographed in them hundreds of times. This photo from a few years later sums up their aesthetic: Mick is fine in a t-shirt, but Keith preferred to raid Anita’s closet (which he was very candid in acknowledging as the source of his look).
The crazy thing is that, for all that Bianca spent a good bit of time at Nellcôte
in the summer of 1971, and was one of the most-photographed women of the 70s, I’ve found virtually NO pictures of Keith and Bianca together, at any point in their lives, much less the summer of 1971.
The closest I could find a quick perusal of Google Images is this one from Mick and Bianca’s wedding in May 1971, with Keith standing a ways behind Mick, wearing yet another filthy long-sleeved thing.
I’m sure this is all part of a larger story of why Keith and Bianca never had much use for each other nor kept much of each other’s company, even when they were literally living under the same roof, however briefly.
Someone likely had some words with Keef about the inappropriateness of his wedding attire, so he dressed up for the reception afterward, whereupon he almost immediately passed out.
Look, as hard as I try, I know I screw up plenty of these photo IDs, and I’m eternally grateful for every single correction I get. This is also way, way more documentation than a simple “nuh-uh” actually merits LOL but srsly u ppl, that’s MICK and Bianca up top.
I do adore the vibe of the Stones in France in the summer of 1971, though, and welcome this chance to put a bunch of photos from this period in a single post. There really are hundreds of them, every one a gem in its own way. I’ll get to more soon!
