Grace Barnett Wing

I first posted this amazing photo in 2014, and since then, I’ve seen it mislabeled every which way, including being attributed to Woodstock (uhm, no), or Jefferson Airplane (no). What can I say? I was feeling poetic at the time, and since I  was feeling like this picture got to the heart of something uniquely GRACE, I went with her birth name for my caption, rather than my typical detail-oriented approach.

So here’s the rest of the story: this is Grace Slick with Jefferson STARSHIP, performing a free show on May 30 1975, in Marx Meadows (not Speedway Meadows or Hellman Meadows or Lindley Meadows, all of which I’ve also seen; details here) at Golden Gate Park. This was just before the release of Red Octopus less than two weeks later, by far the best album of any Jefferson-anything incarnation, and to this day, the best-selling as well.

I do still feel like this is the most GRACE of photos of her, so I was delighted to see it pop up her on her official Twitter feed last year, with this classically Grace quote: “I mean, brassieres and stuff, if you don’t want to wear one, just take it off.”

I still don’t know who took this amazing photo, though, so if anyone knows,  ping me, and I’ll add that as well.
