“Michael was a fan and friend of ours and kept telling me, ‘Freddie, you need a song the cats can dance to.’ John introduced this riff to us during rehearsal that we all immediately thought of disco, which was very popular at the time. We worked it out and once it was ready, played it for Michael. I knew we had a hit as he bobbed his head up and down. ‘That’s it, that’s the gravy. Release it and it will top the charts,’ he said. So we did and it did.”

(Mini BoRhap timeline rant: the movie showed the song taking shape during the making of the Hot Space album, when in fact it had already become the biggest single of the decade two years earlier. TWO YEARS EARLIER. And yes, it was the biggest single of the decade.

I mean, imagine seeing a Beatles movie where, during the making of Abbey Road in 1969, the lads are arguing about a concept album until Paul pipes up and says, “Okay, but what if we wear colorful military outfits, and call the group by a different name?” and the other lads stopping arguing and said, “Hmmm, not bad, not bad, that might work.” It already happened two years ago, and yeah, it worked, became the biggest album of the decade.

I still like BoRhap, but that kind of thing was unneccessary and insulting.)

Michael Jackson, Los Angeles 1971, by Gene Trindl, my edit, original via.

(The challenge of this edit underscores why it’s mostly the b&w shots from this shoot that have been widely published. The color balance for the red background pushed Michael’s skin green, and the exposure balance for his backlit hair lightened his skin too much, but adding too much light to his hair also showed that the red background had spilled onto it, making it look like a wig! So I went into Photoshop and tried to rebalance it all by zone. It’s not perfect, but I guarantee that it’s by far the best thing out there right now. Coming soon, more of the black and white shots, which actually came out beautifully from the start.)
